This is a great unit but if you have a newer Chrysler/Jeep vehicle with the Infinity system you will need a special wiring harness. The only harness you can use is the Metra CHTO-03 and it is not easy to find and usually on backorder. You can not install this system without it.

  2. Life before the Avic = :) Life After = :(

No worries – today is celebration day! I am finally getting this piece of garbage uninstalled. No more driving lost because the navigation quit halfway through my trip, no more listenting to Helen Reddy for hours because the unit locked up when the heavy metal station changed format, and no more

The avic-z2 worked ok for the first four months – if you discount the awkward ergonomics:

    > pathetically small buttons which I guess is ok if you have small hands, but I certainly don’t want any of my dates to see that I can use them well

    > useless iPod interface (must scroll five songs at a time to find one you are looking for – fun with 4,000. Have you ever looked for that elusive Bananarama song while driving? Well, don’t. Is is embarrassing to here it is playing when the officer arrives after plowing into the back of a cement truck because)

    > Radio station screen that does not display the 6th station preset without scrolling and no RDS? Really?

    > No easy way to turn it off

    > No dedicated buttons to go to the function (radio, XM, CD) so you have to scroll through using the small buttons

The navigation was ok if you consider the learning feature never worked. One year and the unit never learned that I never take the road out of my neighborhood it suggested. I think the learning feature was just a prank by pioneer.

The blue tooth was always intermittent, but then four months later the real problems started

On cool mornings below 55 the screen was dark until I held down the video button and then pushed the screen, on hot days over 80 the unit completely locked up, the cd/dvd drive motor often ran without discs in it, the disc door stopped working consistently, and on and on.

I tried the firmware update, but that was obviously another fake put out by pranksters at Pioneer.

I will never buy from Pioneer again. In fact, I will use Pioneer ownership as a reference when I evaluate the judgement of others.

If you work at Pioneer, you obviously hate all of us. I would go so far as to suggest that you are a terrorist. Your parents probably threw a party when you chose an out of state college. Your girlfriend probably is in a support program for battered women.

The only car I would put this in would be a Pontiac Aztec. That was the only product sold in the last 10 years that was worse. And I am including that stupid Head On thing. I think the Avic should be sold by that Oxyclean guy.

I have owned this unit for almost a year now and have had nothing but problems. Lots of freezing issues, even after I upgraded the firmware. It’s always a question whether it will boot up. And when it does, it takes forever. I have to reset the unit at least once a week. Now, after all my other troubles, I have NO sound.

It’s a shame because it should be a great unit. The graphics are amazing on both the map and the XM radio icons. But even when the unit is working properly, the software is subpar. My 200 dollar Garmin portable is a far better GPS. Imputing addresses is awkward and cumbersome. POI is almost useless. The iPod interface is a waste of time. If you have an iPod with a couple thousand songs like me, it can literally take you 20 minutes to scroll through your entire library. The ONLY way to do it is to create specific playlists and keep them at a minimum because scrolling artist, album, song, etc is so slow. There is no trip calculator to tell you average speed, miles driven, etc. It boasts a route learning system, but that never works. It’s estimated time of arrival is based on average speeds already imputed into the system so it’s usually way off.

The point is, it looks nice and flashy, but it’s a real disappointment. Maybe they’ve made some improvements on the Z3. Also beware that when I had this installed it totally messed up the electrical system in my new H3 causing several stalls. This was the fault of the installer, but something to consider with new vehicles — once you begin messing with the innards, you risk permanent damage. I had to install a new amplifier just to make this work.

I purchased This supposedly fantastic unit a month ago. For more than a month of my daily commute it doesn’t recognize a major exit off the freeway. It didn’t learn as they claim.I spoke to pioneer, who asked to check the installation, so i went back to firedog who verified that everything is installed properly. i called tech support again who informed me that it’s defective software. The software doesn’t calculate certain exits, even though they are on the map. He said that I can’t return it and they may be able to update the software in a year.

I don’t recommend this unit or tech support to anybody.

  5. The good:

Great graphics, loaded with features, pretty easy to use.

    The bad:

    - Sometimes the screen goes blank and the only way to get it back is to turn off the car.

    - iPod interface is SLOW with no alpha lookup – BIG GLITCH! And scrolling is SLOW.

    - GPS is off when you first get going – it shows that I’m in the middle of a field when I leave from home. It takes a bit for the GPS to find the unit. I didn’t experience this with my last NAV system.

    - Bluetooth interface is ok but could be improved. So far I haven’t found how to remove a device previously paired.

Overall I like the unit. I hope Pioneer updates the software. The previous review that stated you can’t change music selections while moving is wrong – you can change radio stations, iPod selections/playlists.
